Bitcoin’s total supply is limited by its software and will never exceed 21,000,000 coins. New coins are created during the process known as “mining”: as transactions are relayed across the network, they get picked up by miners and packaged into blocks, which are in turn protected by complex cryptographic calculations.

Bitcoin has not been premined, meaning that no coins have been mined and/or distributed between the founders before it became available to the public. However, during the first few years of BTC’s existence, the competition between miners was relatively low, allowing the earliest network participants to accumulate significant amounts of coins via regular mining: Satoshi Nakamoto alone is believed to own over a million Bitcoin.

Utility tokens have value only within their respective ecosystems. While they may have a monetary value on the open crypto market, they are not intended to be a medium of exchange, a hedge against inflation, or a long-term store of value. Utility tokens have a specific purpose within an ecosystem and can be used to drive growth or to raise funds.

Thanks to its pioneering nature, BTC remains at the top of this energetic market after over a decade of existence. Even after Bitcoin has lost its undisputed dominance, it remains the largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization that surpassed the $1 trillion mark in 2021, after Bitcoin price hit an all-time high of $64,863.10 on April 14, 2021. This is owing in large part to growing institutional interest in Bitcoin, and the ubiquitousness of platforms that provide use-cases for BTC: wallets, exchanges, payment services, online games and more.

The top crypto is considered a store of value, like gold, for many — rather than a currency. This idea of the first cryptocurrency as a store of value, instead of a payment method, means that many people buy the crypto and hold onto it long-term (or HODL) rather than spending it on items like you would typically spend a dollar — treating it as digital gold.

Now, as Treasury secretary Janet Yellen admits her fears over the future of the U.S. dollar, former U.S. president and 2024 Republican White House race nominee Donald Trump has revealed JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, an arch-bitcoin and crypto skeptic, has « all of a sudden changed his tune. »

« There’s a cryptocurrency which might actually do something, » Dimon said of smart chain-enriched blockchains. « You can use it to buy and sell real estate and move data — tokenizing things that you do something with. »

“JPMorgan and the other big banks have no choice but to go down this road,” said Ed Yardeni, the former chief economist at Deutsche Bank who now leads Yardeni Research. “If JPMorgan doesn’t do it, someone else will.”

The increase in competition between miners for new Bitcoins has seen large increases in the amount of computing power and electricity required (which is often used for air conditioning to cool computer systems). While it is difficult to calculate with precision, some estimates suggest that the annual energy consumption of the Bitcoin system is roughly equal to the country of Thailand.

The Schwab Crypto Thematic ETF will not invest in any cryptocurrency or digital assets directly. It invests in companies listed in the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index and is designed to deliver global exposure to companies that may benefit from the development or utilization of cryptocurrencies (including bitcoin) and other digital assets, and the business activities connected to blockchain and other distributed ledger technology.

Today, while many crypto users understand and appreciate these differences, traders and lay investors may not notice the difference because all categories of tokens tend to trade on crypto exchanges in the same way.

On Sep. 15, 2022, Ethereum completed its long-anticipated transition to the proof-of-stake (PoS) validation method. PoS is less energy-intensive because it removes incentivized mining, makes the blockchain more efficient, and allows it to scale better.

In theory, cryptocurrencies are meant to be decentralized, their wealth distributed between many parties on a blockchain. Ownership is becoming more concentrated, as witnessed by companies purchasing and holding them for price appreciation and investment fund managers buying them to hold in their funds.
